Waverley keeping things current

P1100032-1-2
Waverley passes Ardentinny this afternoon with a number of paddle steamer aficionados on board.

On paddle steamer Waverley’s penultimate cruise of the season up Loch Long today, it was good to hear, as part of the excellent on-board commentary, a mention of Glenfinart Walled Garden and its inclusion in the latest episode of the BBC’s Beechgrove Garden. This was in addition to the usual references to Harry Lauder’s song “O’er the Hill to Ardentinny” and Coulport. Excellent that Waverley is keeping its visitor information up-to-date.

The last weekly cruise of the season by Waverley up Loch Long from Blairmore is next Tuesday at 14:05 with a final cruise leaving Blairmore Pier on Saturday October 19 at 13:00. For more information visit waverleyexcursions.co.uk.

Goodwill to all ladies and gentlemen

Santa’s little helpers brought some Christmas magic to Ardentinny’s award-winning loos this week with a festive display and complimentary sweets for weary travellers. The immaculate conveniences which won awards for “Loo of the year” in 2004, 2006 and 2007 have been decked out with a santa, festive wreath and a jar of Werther’s Originals!

So tonight if you see a sleigh in the car park, it’s only old St. Nick taking a well-earned comfort break from his busiest night of the year!

A peaceful Christmas to you all.

Relocation, relocation.. felines in the fast lane

Buffy, looking for his forever home. Can you help?

Argyll-based animal adoption website Spanimal joined with volunteers throughout the UK last weekend to transport four homeless cats from the south of England to Argyll Animal Aid in Oban. The initiative coordinated by Nickoftime.org.uk created a network of nine local volunteer drivers in regions between Wiltshire and Oban to transport Benson and Buffy from Swindon and two additional cats from Doncaster. Fortunately the transport went flawlessly with the cats enjoying some well-earned r&r on Sunday night in Ardentinny before heading for the Small Paws sanctuary on Seil Island, Oban on Monday.

Animal welfare groups in several parts of the UK find themselves inundated  with unwanted pets, with too few homes to go around. In the more rural areas, these forgotten pets hopefully will have a better opportunity of finding their forever homes.

If you would like to help in future transportation of dogs and cats in your area of the UK, please contact Nickoftime here.

These four beautiful cats from the south are now all waiting for caring homes around Argyll. If you’re interested in adopting, then please contact Pat at Argyll Animal Aid or phone 01852 300362.

[Update 3 Sept.] One contributor in our Facebook page thinks it’s a Northern Bottlenose Whale. Our money’s on this suggestion!

With reports in the last few days of a Minke Whale being spotted in Loch Long at Ardmay. Is this photograph (taken this afternoon) of a porpoise or Minke Whale? Answers below please or on our new Facebook page.
