At last week’s Ardentinny Community Council meeting, Cllr. Bruce Marshall reported the following:

As there is a requirement for no obstruction to be placed nearer than 1.5 metres from the road, large stones on verges are not acceptable. The Council will be taking steps for these stones to be removed from verges in the village.

Bus schedule changes
The recent introduction of the 489 bus route from Glenfinart to Toward has met with widespread disapproval as frequently the timetable did not tie-in with Dunoon ferry departures. Councillor Marshall advised that the bus schedule is to be changed at the end of June.

Sea defences
Councillor Marshall confirmed that the extensive Shore Sea Defences work in Ardentinny was now complete.

New Argyll Trust
The Councillor outlined the work of the new Argyll & the Isles Coast & Countryside Trust, of which he is a board member. The first meeting concentrated on the elimination of rhododendron ponticum. As villagers will be aware there is currently a major rhododendron eradication project being undertaken by Forestry Commission Scotland around Ardentinny.

Community feedback sought on Park Development Plan

Sandy Beach, Glenfinart Bay - an opportunity?
Sandy Beach, Glenfinart Bay – an opportunity?

Last week, Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park board member, David McKenzie , provided residents with details of the recently published “LIVE Park – Main Issues Report”.

“LIVE Park” is the name for the National Park’s next Local Development Plan. The report focuses on how planning can improve the National Park as a place in which to live, invest, or to visit.

With regard to Ardentinny, the report summarises the following issues: limited employment opportunities; local roads’condition/capacity; and the room for improvement of these roads.

Regarding”Opportunities” in the village, the preferred options are to continue to support appropriate small gap site housing development; support improvements to footpaths and cycle path connections to the wider Cowal area and Argyll Forest park, as well as improvements in  street lighting and visitor signage.

At last week’s Community Council meeting, one resident pointed out that, as Ardentinny has the only beach in the National Park, this resource should also be highlighted as an opportunity.

The National Park is encouraging all residents to comment on the proposals. These must be submitted no later than 5 p.m. on Monday 7 July, 2014. Feedback can be submitted by online form;  the ‘online development planning system’; post; in person at a LIVE Park event; or by telephone. Full details are available here.

Winning over the weed…

P1160382-1

Last weekend a group of Cowal gardeners was treated to a horticultural masterclass courtesy of Glenfinart Walled Garden’s resident gardener, Glyn Toplis. The hands-on classes are part of the garden’s ‘drop-in’ days organised by Ardentinny Community Trust to encourage Cowal residents and visitors to participate in its community garden.

Glyn, with his extensive horticultural experience of some 30 years, offered a very useful and entertaining insight into the world of weeds and their control. Walking around the garden, Glyn provided the group with tips on the best ways of eradicating specific weeds whilst considering both the weed above ground and the root system below. He also illustrated how certain plants can be weakened by the weed.

Asked about the composting of weeds, Glyn gave an outline as to which could be composted successfully. He also showed the group samples of plants in and around the walled garden which would have originally been ornamental plants, but now, due to their wild profusion, have become a garden nuisance.

The theme of the next Masterclass at the Walled Garden is ‘Summer Flowering Plants’ on Saturday 14 June at 2pm. Entry is free and everyone is welcome.

Glenfinart Walled Garden is open daily noon until 4pm. Visitors and volunteers are most welcome. Entry is free. Location map here.
