Ammunition found near Ardentinny [ardentinny.org exclusive]

The 120 blank cartridges

A green sealed plastic bag marked “BAE Systems” was found by an Ardentinny resident on Tuesday afternoon near the path from Carrick Castle to Ardentinny. The resident said “We were following the newly reopened walk from Carrick Castle to Ardentinny in advance of the organised community walk next weekend. We noticed the plastic bag near the path and assumed that it was probably a food pack left over from an exercise”.

Closer inspection revealed that the bag contained 6 boxes of unused blank 5.56mm cartridges, a total of 120 cartridges. Each box showed the following marking: RORG 24-04-07 20CARTS 5.56mm BLANK L18A1. The find was reported to Dunoon Police who have now collected the cartridges.

Over the summer months, more people are going to be using the Carrick Castle to Ardentinny path and local residents are rightly concerned that other ordnance could be in the area.

A Strathclyde Police spokesperson said “It was reported to police that a package was found, police will contact Faslane and police will dispose of the package accordingly”.

Ardentinny Gents Invitation Triples

Gents Invitation Triples
Robinson Cup

Sponsored by Western Ferries

Sunday 2nd May saw 48 bowlers descend on Ardentinny to compete for the Robinson Cup.

After a short welcoming speech by Ardentinny B.C. Pres. G.Smith, competition commenced with the first prize winner of the day being Curly Black of Colintraive achieving the first toucher. Unfortunately he was sorely disappointed when he discovered the prize wasn’t encased in glass.

The day progressed with varying standards of bowling, accompanied by varying degrees of success but whatever level was attained everyone enjoyed the day and competed in a friendly and sporting manner.

The weather was a bit more benign than usual, although cold with a mix of sunhine and showers, one of which was torrential.

Semi finalists were as follows: J.Adamson (skip), A.Marshall, D.Menzies. Ardentinny B.C. v D.Beattie (skip), A.Kennedy, S.McNab. Upper Cowal B.C. and P.Good (skip), A.Campbell, J.Smith. Pollockshaws B.C. V M.Martin (skip), J.Gilchrist, D.Reynolds. Rothesay B.C., with the teams from Pollockshaws and Upper Cowal making it through to the final.

In a competitive and hard fought final the triple from Upper Cowal retained the Trophy, which was no mean feat considering the standard of bowls that were being played, and they had even less money than that other team that won two in a row!

Margaret Robinson presented the Cup and prizes to the recipients.

Alex Kennedy then gave a short speech of appreciation in which he thanked the Umpire and Score keeper Lettie Dempster and the ladies for all the hard work they had put into preparing and serving the morning coffee, tea and toast, the excellent lunch and for the provision of the afternoon tea and last but not least the overworked drinks dispenser.

Despite making a quick exit back to the wilds of Lochgoil the triple of A.Hammond (skip) D.Mclaughlan, R.Fletcher WILL be getting the booby prizes they so richly deserve sent to them.

The Committee would like to thank the following, WESTERN FERRIES OUR SPONSORS, All the bowlers from kindred clubs who travel from far and wide to participate in the competition IN ALL SORTS OF WEATHER. Also, members who assisted in the preparation of the green and surrounds, members and non members who worked so hard throughout the day. It is greatly appreciated.

A heartfelt thanks to all, without your input the day would not happen.

Village Hall Open Day

The Village Hall held a successful Open Day on Sunday  25 April. The intention was to seek the views of the community on what they’d like to see take place in the hall and what they would be prepared to participate in. Very welcome tea and home baking were on offer and Gordon Smith kindly set up Carpet Bowling and willingly tutored those who wished to have a go. The Village Hall Committee will publish the results of its consultation in due course.

Ardentinny Bowling Club Season Opening

Showers and sunshine were the order of the day on Saturday 17 April as President Gordon Smith welcomed a large attendance of members, friends and bowlers from kindred clubs who had braved the Council and Forestry Commission potholes to attend the opening of Ardentinny B.C. 2010 season.

Before the opening ceremony a minutes silence was held in memory of four of our members who had recently passed away.

Gordon then introduced the opening party of Councillor Alex McNaughton, Colintraive B.C., Sheila Vosper, Ardentinny B.C and Vice President Archie Neilson. In his speech he went on to thank everyone for coming, before commenting briefly on the green and the new changing facilities which was erected to replace the much loved caravan which had finally succumbed to the odd shower and gentle breezes which had beset the area over its lifetime.

Alex McNaughton then spoke on behalf of Kindred Clubs and wished Ardentinny  B.C. a prosperous and successful season at PARIURI CASINO.

Sheila Vosper accompanied by Archie Nielson then delivered the silver jack and two bowls and President Smith declared the green open for season 2010.

The winners of the hotly contested wappenshaw were as follows:
Les Hamilton, Ardentinny B.C., Isobel Collier, Upper Cowal B.C. and Jenny Campbell, Bogleha B.C. with the first toucher being won by Gordon Smith.

The Committee wish to thank everyone who supplied purvey, raffles and helped in any way towards making the day such a success.
