On 31st January, stalwart supporters of Glenfinart Walled Garden,who still remember when an orchard grew there, turned up to begin planting 30 young fruit trees brought by John Hancox, from The Commonwealth Orchard. John is the person who began Apple Day, which is now celebrated every year in the Scottish Parliament. He is also an expert in Scottish Heritage Trees.
Leigh Hamilton, ranger with the National Park, brought 4 volunteers to help and along with some local people, a good start was made in spite of the very wet weather. Bill Williamson, Convenor of Ardentinny Community Trust thanked Leigh and also, John Brown (Strone) Ltd who have contributed to making the garden safe for volunteers. He also thanked the Forestry Commission for their help in readying the ground for planting.
Dave Lilley who has lived in Ardentinny for over 40 years, joked: “ When is the time to plant an apple tree? If not 20 years ago then now!” Dave continued, “It was good to make a contribution to the future, especially for the young people of Cowal.” The morning was rounded off with some delicious soup and sandwiches provided for the volunteers by Anna Williamson, Merle Ferguson and Lynn Kerr.

My apologies if we have already met and I don’t recognize your name. I wondered if you would like to volunteer to help out with the Walled Garden? There are lots of opportunities which don’t necessarily involve hard physical labour eg fundraising ,historic research and donations. I don’t think many villagers expect to see a fully mature garden come into being this year especially on a shoe string budget. Those who have donated energy ,time and money (special thanks for the dung Elaine and Billy and sorry you didn’t get a mention in the press!) , would value your contribution.
