I quite agree with "Winners". It would appear that most of the fireworks were around the finart hotel (though not exclusively). If these "organised" fireworks are to continue, should the villagers not be advised in advance? I'm particularly concerned the effect the fireworks have on the horses at the stables (just across from the hotel) and domestic animals in general. Some forewarning would be helpful!

I agree with lochladdie & winner This is an increasing problem where almost anyone can buy fireworks and set them off at will. Are there not guidelines or laws that say at least a certain amount of warning must be given to the public, particularly near neighbours who may be elderly and/or have domestic animals? Pets and, horses in particular, are very susceptible to extreme fright and panic in these circumstances.

I'm pleased to see I have some support on this issue. According to the law, fireworks may not be used between 11pm and 7am although there are one or two exceptions, one being for New Year's Eve. Having said that, the extension for New Year's Eve only goes to 1am.

I thought I might be seen as just another grumpy old man. I like this village and I want it to stay that way. Thank you.

This should be an issue for the Community Council. However, as they meet so seldom, perhaps an approach for advice to Argyll and Bute Council is in order. The aim being to avoid a recurrence of such a disturbance within this largely elderly community. And for those who like to celebrate with lights, how about the more peaceful option of a few Chinese lanterns?

With respect I really don't see a problem here. How frequently do we see fireworks in Ardentinny? Everyone is aware it's new year and with it we have fireworks. I'm all for organised events (such as at the hotel) rather than individuals doing their own thing.

Skippy...I don't have an issue with fireworks, I've let off more than my fair share of bangers over the years, and as I've said, I can understand folks wanting to let the New Year in with them; more than that, I've come to expect it. My point is that they should be let off on or around midnight - not at 1:30 in the morning.

...as you'll see from my first post on the subject, I'm totally in favour of people enjoying themselves...so long as they're not a nuisance to others and so long as they keep it legal. Looks like you failed on both counts Dee!

And btw..I have a life.  End of subject.

First of all, i would like to say that i am all in favour of fireworks to celebrate the New Year.

I am not in favour of Fireworks used irresponsibly in any way what so ever, using or the use of fireworks in an area that is in close proximity to animals grazing, stabled horses or livestock, should be carefully examined indeed. Failing to consider these anaimals in an organised fireworks event, should i think be a consideration for reporting to the licensing authorities, with regards to irresponsible behaviour. on their part.

Is it not the responsibility of adults at a bonfire to protect the lives of children, firstly from the bonfire and secondly from the fireworks, making sure they dont come to any harm. Is it not irresponsible then to neglect the safety of animals that habit an area very close to the event.

At the very least, consideration should have been given well in advance to warn animal owners, and afford them the chance to protect them by moving them to an area well out of the way and less likely to scare and alarm themselves.

Common sense with regards to safety to all, should be the first considerstion in the use of fireworks, and i am sure in the future this will happen.

Unfortunately, in so many cases, we have to learn by making mistakes,  so saying 'get a life'  does not help in any way, and does not protect the lives of animals that we protect on a day to day basis, not for one day a year.
